Webinar: Embracing Metabolic Surgery for Type 2 Diabetes
The American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) as an effective intervention for both obesity and type 2 diabetes due to dramatic and sustainable outcomes. However, this treatment continues to be underused; fewer than 1% of eligible patients choose to undergo MBS.1 Some clinician-facilitated barriers to MBS include therapeutic inertia, when a clinician does not appropriately intensify treatment for type 2 diabetes, and a bias against MBS despite evidence supporting its efficacy.
Join Laura Andromalos, MS, RD, RN, CDCES, and Mary Elizabeth Patti, MD, on Thursday, October 30, 2025, from 2-3:30 p.m. ET, for a webinar that emphasizes the importance of collaboration across health care team members and specialties to support patients in pursuing MBS when clinically warranted. Participants will learn about the pathophysiology of diabetes improvement following MBS and when and how to refer patients for surgical assessment. Leave with practical applications for managing the health of patients with diabetes before and after MBS to optimize outcomes and assist in achieving health goals.
Learning Objectives
After completing this continuing education activity, health care professionals will better be able to:
- Describe the mechanisms of metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) that promote improvement of type 2 diabetes.
- Determine which patients should be referred for MBS.
- Discuss preoperative and postoperative interventions that optimize clinical outcomes for people with type 2 diabetes.
- Explain communication strategies members of the health care team can use to improve treatment and MBS outcomes for patients with type 2 diabetes.

Additional Information
Laura Andromalos, MS, RD, RN, CDCES, has worked from coast to coast as a dietitian, diabetes educator, and nutrition manager since 2009, specializing in weight management, specifically metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS). In 2022, Laura expanded her scope by becoming a nurse. She is a bilingual labor and delivery nurse at Hennepin Healthcare in Minneapolis, MN, where she combines her dual disciplines to support the health of women and newborns.
Laura holds a BS in Nutrition Sciences from Cornell University, a MS in Health Communication from Boston University, and a MS in Nursing from Capella University. She volunteers in several professional organizations and has presented at conferences around the world. Outside of work, Laura is a flying trapeze artist and an avid traveler with her husband, Mike, and pup, Bandit. In 2024, she welcomed her first child, Gino, who she hopes will love circus and travel as well.
Mary-Elizabeth Patti, MD, is a physician-scientist and adult endocrinologist at Joslin Diabetes Center, Director of the Hypoglycemia Clinic, and Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Patti’s NIH-funded laboratory studies focus on identification of molecular and epigenetic mechanisms by which environmental/nutritional factors during early life confer metabolic disease risk in later life and in subsequent generations. Her clinical/translational studies focus on the intestine as a mediator of systemic glucose metabolism and novel approaches to treatment of post-bariatric hypoglycemia.
Dr. Patti received her MD from Jefferson Medical College, graduating magna cum laude. She completed her internal medicine residency at the University of Pittsburgh and her endocrinology fellowship at Harvard Medical School. Outside of work, Dr. Patti is the proud mom of three children, five cats, and one dog.
