Webinar: Menopause Misinformation: Separating Health from Hype in the New Year

January 11, 2023

Menopause is a natural event in a woman's life. However, for many women menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, mood dysregulation, and weight gain are distressing and disruptive and they are looking for non-pharmacological, lifestyle interventions to help manage this part of their health.

Along with primary care physicians, gynecologists, mental health providers, and others, dietitians are critical members of the health care team who are often sought out for advice to help women navigate lifestyle interventions like proper nutrition, exercise suggestions, and supplement strategies. While there has been increasing media attention on women's health and menopause, confusing and fear-based messaging combined with a tenacious diet and anti-aging culture has contributed to misinformation about what is best for women when managing their health during the transition to menopause and in the postmenopausal years.

Join Val Schonberg, MS, RDN, CSSD, LD, NCMP, FAND, on Wednesday, January 11, 2023, from 2-3:30 p.m. ET, for a webinar that will review the myths and misinformation about menopause. Val will discuss how clinicians can help women manage menopausal symptoms in a variety of ways, as well as combat untruths surrounding what is a normal phase in a woman's life. She will provide an in-depth and interactive case study to help participants work collaboratively across health care professions and discuss evidence-based best practices that clinicians can use to help midlife women make informed decisions about their health.

Learning Objectives

After completing this activity, health care professionals will be better able to:

  1. Identify five areas of misunderstanding that contribute to the ambiguity surrounding the role of nutrition and lifestyle interventions during midlife and menopause.
  2. Explain the impact weight bias has on RDs’ delivery of appropriate nutrition education and counseling to midlife women.
  3. Implement an evidence-based, weight-neutral approach when helping clients manage menopause and the diseases of aging.
  4. Strategize best practices that can be used by an interprofessional team of health care practitioners that result in excellent patient care for women in midlife and menopause.
