Webinar: From Intention to Action: Empowering Patients on GLP-1/Incretin-Based Therapies

June 5, 2025

GLP-1 and incretin-based therapies are transforming the landscape of obesity treatment—but success with these powerful medications does not come with only a prescription. Health care team members must have a deeper understanding of the behavioral counseling tools that are most effective in helping patients build sustainable habits, navigate medication transitions, and stay engaged as they navigate their medication and health journeys.

Join James O. Hill, PhD; Joan Salge Blake, EdD, RDN, LDN, FAND; and Nina Crowley, PhD, RDN, LD, on Thursday, June 5 from 2-3:30 p.m. ET, for an interprofessional conversation that will bring together science, clinical nutrition, and behavioral counseling. What does the latest evidence tell us about how GLP-1s work? What outcomes are typical, including changes in body composition, and when might long-term or intermittent use be appropriate? How can nutrition strategies help manage common side effects like nausea or constipation while ensuring patients meet their protein, hydration, fiber, and micronutrient needs? And how can clinicians bridge the gap between intention and action and provide steady support for the long term?

What is often missing from the conversation is how collaborative, coordinated care between nutrition professionals, physicians, specialists, and the broader health care team is essential to lasting success. With a shared commitment to patient-centered, function-focused outcomes, health care providers can help patients not only lose weight, but live well.

Learning Objectives

After completing this contuing education activity, health care professionals will better be able to:

  1. Describe the role of GLP-1 and incretin-based medications in obesity treatment, including common side effects and considerations for long-term use or discontinuation.
  2. Identify common side effect management strategies for patients taking GLP-1 medications and explain the essential role of the care team in delivering individualized, science-based weight management care.
  3. Apply behavioral counseling strategies to support sustainable lifestyle change, including techniques to prevent weight regain, how to address patient values, and guide both responders and non-responders throughout the GLP-1 medication journey.
  4. Examine how effective communication and coordination among health care providers can optimize patient outcomes with incretin-based therapies.
